The Healthiest New Year Resolutions

The Healthiest New Year Resolutions

New Year, Healthier You

New Year’s resolutions are like babies. They’re fun to make but extremely difficult to maintain.

Most of the people at the start of each new year resolve to make their lives better during the next year. But once the champagne flutes are back on the shelf, it's hard to make that pledge stick. The reason for that is people usually set unrealistic and vague goals. That is why they lose the enthusiasm after they have swept up the confetti.

This year, go easy on yourself. Make specific and healthy resolutions that you can stick with it. Here’s to your health!

Health Resolutions for Women

Start the New Year with a clean bill of health by catching up on all of your health exams. These include:

  • Blood pressure check
  • Cholesterol check
  • Diabetes screening
  • STD test
  • Pap smear (at least every 3 years)
  • Mammogram (every 1-2 years after age 50)
  • Cancer screening (starting at age 50)

Half of women older than 50 will suffer an osteoporosis-related fracture at some point. Start protecting yourself against this debilitating disease now by monitoring your calcium intake this year.

Take time for yourself. Women often take on the role of caretaker within their families, and it’s easy to let their own needs fall by the wayside. This can compound stress. Constant stress can make you more vulnerable to weight gain, depression, sleep loss and high blood pressure. Start prioritizing your own needs this year. Taking time for yourself could be as simple as treating yourself with a nice bath in a filled hot tub.

Health Resolutions for Men

Men are far more reluctant to visit the doctor than women. A great resolution this year is to catch up on all your preventive screenings, such as:

  • Cholesterol check (at least every 5 years starting at age 35)
  • Blood pressure check (every 2 years)
  • Diabetes screening (especially if you have high blood pressure or cholesterol)
  • STD tests
  • Colorectal cancer screening (beginning at age 50)
  • Prostate cancer screening

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancer among men. But the good news is prostate cancer is one of the most treatable forms of cancer and if prostate cancer is found before it spreads to distant parts of the body, the five-year survival rate is more than 90 percent. It’s extremely rare for men under 40 to develop prostate cancer, but the risk increases substantially as men age.

Let’s be honest. No man looks forward to having a prostate exam. Prostate exams are nothing to be embarrassed about nor should they be avoided. Millions of men are alive today because they decided to have their exam. Prostate exams are very important for man, don’t disregard it.
