Dental Implant

A dental implant is a titanium rod which bones can adhere to. It is implemented with a surgical procedure on either the upper or lower jawbone. Following installation, the patient must wait a certain amount of time before continuing their treatment to allow proper adherence to the jawbone. After this, the implant may be used as a support for other dental prostheses such as a bridge, a crown or a replacement tooth.

Dental Implant

Who Need It?

A dental implant may be the right choice for anyone missing one, multiple, or even all of their teeth due to injury, defects, disease or decay.

They are also an option for adolescents after the jaw stops growing following puberty, which is typically around 16 for girls and 18 for boys.

An implant dentist can determine if dental implants are right for you after a consultation which will take into account your needs and consider your dental and medical history.

Important points / Adverse Effects

Most people are good candidates to get dental implants. You must have enough bone in your jaw to allow an implant to be placed in the jawbone. You should be free of periodontal disease. Implants are not recommended for:

  • People who have autoimmune diseases or take medicines used for these conditions
  • People who have had radiation therapy to the head and neck
  • People with uncontrolled diabetes

If the alveolar bone quality is not high enough where the implant placement is planned, bone augmentation techniques should first be applied.

Osteoporosis is not a contraindication because dental implants can be adapted to low density bones. If you are taking bisphosphonates (Fosamax, etc.) for therapy, do not forget to inform our dentist since it may be necessary to stop taking the medication before the procedure can begin.

Teeth grinding and smoking are important factors that can cause problems for the state of the teeth or considerably shorten the lifetime of the treatment. In particular, teeth grinding is an issue due to the pressure it places on the implant during its integration with the jawbone.

Diagnosis and Treatment Methods

Dental implants are a great option for those who suffer from tooth loss. Whether you have lost one, several or all of your teeth, a dental implant can act as a replacement for both the tooth and its root and make you feel as if your natural tooth is still in place.

A dental implant consists of a titanium rod and a dental crown, closely resembling a natural tooth in both structure and function. Through a procedure requiring oral surgery, the titanium rod is fused to your jaw bone and, once the surrounding gums have healed, a dental crown is placed onto it.

The final result is a tooth that matches your remaining natural teeth (if any), and a smile that has been restored to its former state of perfection.

Smokers

Contraindications?

In the normal local anatomy there are some structures which act as anatomical barriers (the lower alveolar nerve inside the mandibular canal, maxillary sinuses, etc).
In other cases, pathological formations (cysts, tumors, etc) inside the oro-maxillary-facial area, which shrink or even destroy the necessary bone for implants.

Lack of bone volume

The major relative contraindications of implants are the insufficient size of the receiving alveolar bone. Because its recovery is possible! Through bone augmentation techniques, we can obtain predictable results!
The conditions which determine contraindications can impact the longevity of dental implants if specific measures are not enforced. Most relative contraindications are only valid during the period the body is decompensated.

After bringing down the parameters to an acceptable level, the implants are inserted. These cases require monitoring programs which involve a strict hygiene and constant visits to the dentist for prophylactic sessions.

OSTEOPOROSIS

Osteoporosis is not a contraindication, therefore we can make dental implants adapted to low density bone.
In osteoporotic conditions treated with bisphosphonates, we recommend you stop treatment (Fosamax, Fosavansetc) some time before implant surgery.

TEETH GRINDING AND SMOKING

Surely, there are conditions or habits (smoking or teeth grinding) which affect the rate of success and durability of dental implants. Teeth grinding is a risk factor, due to the pressure on the implant during bone integration.

Movement of the implant can lead to its loss. In this case, we recommend extending the healing period with no mechanical pressure, occlusion adjustment and wearing some protective layer during sleep.
If you find yourself in any of these situations, we can find a solution to maximize success and maintain the result. We will assess your general state of health and we will find the best treatment for you.

Preparations For The Operation
Consultation with doctor;

The first step in the process of getting dental implants is to meet with your dentist for a consultation. Dental implants require an extensive treatment process, and implants won’t be the best option for all patients.
Your consultation will allow your dentist to examine your teeth, jaws, and gums. Your dentist will determine if your mouth is healthy enough to support the implants, and you’ll also discuss your overall health.
If you are taking certain medications or have medical conditions like diabetes, this information will need to be considered when deciding if implants will be successful in your mouth.

Examinations

Tests include a series of x-rays, a physical examination and a thorough review of your medical history.
X-rays can usually reveal bone spurs damaged joint surfaces and any narrowed joint spaces.
The physical exam will help determine the source of pain with motion and also the degree of loss in range of motion.
The medical history and description of your shoulder problem, such as degree of pain with activity, any limitations in use, loss of motion or pain at rest, can add useful information when developing a treatment plan.

The Treatment

The placement of the implant requires a visit of 3-5 days and is followed by a healing period of between 3 and 6 months during which time the bone bonds to the implant. You can wear your denture during this healing time.

At the end of the healing period, a return visit of between 5 and 15 days is required for the fitting of Porcelain or Zirconium Crowns or over-denture. Many patients can divide the second stage into two shorter visits, with a 1-2 week break in between.

After The Treatment

After the surgery

Once your dental implants have been inserted, you will need to bite down on a gauze pad to stop the bleeding. You will be given a pack of gauze pads to take home with you and apply to the surgical site. Continue to apply the gauze pads until the bleeding has stopped completely; changing them regularly in between.

You will be prescribed antibiotics as well as an antibiotic mouth rinse. You will need to follow the exact instructions for both to ensure your mouth is clean and free of any foreign bodies or bacteria. If you are in discomfort after the surgery you may also be given a painkiller to alleviate any pain.

Recovering from surgery

To relieve discomfort and swelling apply an ice pack for approximately twenty minutes each hour after surgery. We also recommend keeping your head elevated for the first 24 to 48 hours after surgery. This will further reduce the swelling and minimize bleeding. You also need to relax as much as possible and avoid any strenuous activities for up to three days after surgery.

Your Diet

Whilst recovering from surgery, it is essential to drink at least eight glasses of water or fruit juice each day. It is also important to limit your diet to soft foods (e.g. yoghurt or soup) during the first week and avoid chewing any hard foods on the implant site. Avoid tea, coffee, spicy meals and alcohol for 48 hours following this treatment.

Oral Hygiene

You will be asked to rinse your mouth with a warm saltwater solution – one teaspoon of salt in one cup of water – four times a day to further disinfect the area and avoid any possibility of infection.

Departure from airport

You will be accompanied to the airport by a personal assistance. If necessary wheelchair assistance will be arranged in the airport.
